The SCIOS collaboration was co-ordinated from the Heriot-Watt University, Department of Physics, originally under the direction of Professor Des Smith. The Heriot-Watt group had pioneered, over a number of years, the development of a series of two-dimensional free-space digital optical computing demonstrators, including the operation of the world's first all-optical computer.
