A
major thrust of the current CIOS research programme is directed at the application
of optical methods for communicating large amounts of data to and from high-performance
silicon integrated circuits. The "road-map" published by the silicon
chip industry identifies chip to-chip interconnections as a problem area that,
given current electrical techniques, will cause major internal bottlenecks and
hence serious performance limitations in future systems.
