The Centre for Integrated Optoelectronic Systems (CIOS) has its roots in the earlier SCIOS research programme-The Scottish Collaborative Initiative in Optoelectronic Sciences.

In 1990 this Scottish-based university collaboration, led by Heriot-Watt University, was established with funding from the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
