The two overall objectives of the SCIOS programme were:
Device technologies - to pursue research into the physics, materials sciences and fabrication technologies underlying development of optical and optoelectronic devices
Systems development - to combine the results of this research with the necessary information processing concepts so as to realise free-space parallel optoelectronic computing demonstrators experimentally.
